Library Loot

Library Loot is co-hosted by Claire at The Captive Reader and Marg at The Adventures of an Intrepid Reader.  This week it's hosted by Marg at The Adventures of an Intrepid Reader. ,  so pop over and see who else is participating.
Well compared to last week, a small loot this week! Only four books.

This was a recommendation from a client at work, and with a subtitle like that, how could I resist!

From the blurb: When Miles Franklin-shortlisted novelist Brenda Walker became sick, she turned to two healers: doctors and books. This is the story of how she recovered.

One of the last two books from the 2010 CBC Older Readers Shortlist
that I need to read.

A Small Free Kiss in the Dark - Glenda Millard

The other book from the 2010 CBC Older Readers Shortlist
that I need to read.

The Happiest Refugee - Anh Do

Anh Do is a very funny Australian comedian who along with his family, arrived in Australia in the late 70's via boat.

At the moment (in fact for several years) there has been fierce debate in Australia around boat people. At the moment, they are detained in detention centres for up to and past 12 months. These are people fleeing persecution and danger. Last week, SBS TV showed a brilliant three part "reality" show, where they took 6 ordinary Australians with a variety of views on refugees coming to our country and took them on a reverse journey. It has sparked huge amounts of debate - which can only be a good thing. The series was called Go Back to Where You Came From and is well worth a look if you can get hold of it.

Hamlet - William Shakespeare; illustrated by Nicki Greenberg

The whole of Hamlet in graphic novel form! Brilliant!

It has been awhile since I've done a loot post. In fact, it's been awhile since I've done a post! Life is busy, but hopefully today I'll be able to catch up on some stuff. Loot first!

Little Children - read the book ages ago, am interested in seeing what the movie is like.

Deadliest Catch - Season 6. Last season available until season 7 comes out. I will be watching for it! I've already watched and returned this.

Mad Men Season 3. Fantastic series!
Watched and returned

Watched and returned.
The Cider House Rules. A movie I have heard a lot about and am interested to watch.

Not much loot this week - getting ready to head off on a two week camping holiday where I plan to use my kindle for most of my reading. No non-books - no electronic devices when we camp!

Low GI Diet. 12 Week Weight Loss Plan - Jennie Brand-Miller – I need to lose weight. This looks interesting and may be worth giving ago. Unfortunately in the end, the only way I will lose it though is if I move...

Glass House – Sonya Hartnett – continuing to work my way through Hartnett’s book. This was her 3rd book published.

So not alot of loot this week and no loot at all for the next two weeks. Instead I'll be here!

It's a big loot this time, so get ready!

Non Books

Doctor Who Season 2, Discs 3&4 - was actually quite lucky to get this. We have two copies of this at work, both we tagged as lost, which means they are so overdue, we assume the borrower has lost them. A quick call to both clients at least saw one copy returned!

My Sister's Keeper - I have been avoiding this. I read the book and knew they had changed the ending - I hate it when they do that! Figured if I didn't pay for it, I could manage. Yep, they changed the end, but I still bawled! Good to know that Jodi Piccoult mother's annoy me just as much in a movie as they do in the books!

The Big Bang Theory Season 1 - So many friends have raved about this series I had to see if the hype was justified. I've watch the first few episodes and yep, it's funny.

The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency - loved these books. Will be interested to see what the series is like.

Books

The Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) has released the 2011 short list. I want to read the short listed older readers book before the winner is announced on Friday 19 August. So I've grabbed or reserved them all. The first four are ones that were on the shelf at work.

Graffiti Moon - Cath Crowley - short listed for the CBCA older readers book, 2011.

About A Girl - Joanne Horniman - - short listed for the CBCA older readers book, 2011.

The Midnight Zoo - Sonya Hartnett - short listed for the CBCA older readers book, 2011.

The Piper's Son - Melinda Marchetta - - short listed for the CBCA older readers book, 2011.

The Taste of Apple - James Laidler -  a novel in verse. This also contains a CD which is a complete e book with music and spoken word tracks. I'm really looking forward to listening to this.

How To Ditch Your Fairy by Justine Larbalestier - I went looking for this and the following book, Magic or Madness after reading Justine Larbalestier's Liar.

Magic or Madness - Justine Larbalestier

An Artist of the Floating World - Kazuo Ishiguro -  My continuing hunt for an Ishiguro novel I like as much as Never Let Me Go

If I Stay - Gayle Forman -  I've read several reviews of this, but it was Carly's over at Writing From the Tub that caught my eye the first time.

My War: Killing Time in Iraq - Colby Buzzell - I can't remember where I read a review of this, but it was enough to request the library buy it. They did!

The Union Quilters - Jennifer Chiaverini - The latest in the Elm Creek Quilt series. You can read my review here.

It Sucked and Then I Cried: How I Had A Baby, A Breakdown and A Much Need Margarita - Heather B Armstrong. - A book by one of my favorite bloggers ever! Heather writes the highly popular dooce.com. Don't click on the link if you offend easily. Do click on it if you like a really good laugh! I have learnt not to read dooce while drinking anything! You can read my review of the book here.

A Pressure Cooker Saved My Life - Juanita Phillips. - Juanita Phillips is a well known Australian journalist who tried to have it all, but ended up having a breakdown instead. This is her book to help you avoid the same thing. You can read my review here.

So as you can see, there will be a lot of YA reading going on around here!

As usual, lets start with the non books.

Deadliest Catch, season 5. Discs 1&2 and 3&4

This is the last of the Deadliest Catch until the library gets season 6. Season 7 starts in the States on April 12 so we have almost caught up!

Books

Layla's Story by Vanessa Gorman

I really have to stop reading magazines - they keep suggesting books! This is going to be a bit of a harrowing read. I remember the documentary Vanessa Gorman did about her pregnancy and Layla's death and it had me sobbing.

Lament - Maggie Stiefvater

Given how much I  liked Linger and Shiver, is anyone really surprised about this??

The Group - Mary McCarthy (audio book)

My new one for the car. Another article recommendation!

So Much for That - Lionel Shriver

So here's the thing. I turn up for work one day and this is on the holds shelf for me. I have vague recollections of putting it on hold, but not why! I'm sure I had a good reason, so I'll give it a go!

Low Red Moon - Lyn Devlin

Yep, another article! It said something about it being as good or better than Stiefvater's stuff so well worth a go.

The Complete Peanuts by Charles M Schulz

I've read Volumes one and two, went to borrow three and we didn't have it!! Put a request in, they bought it. Yay!! Now to continue my Peanuts quest!

The Night Bookmobile - Audrey Niffenegger
Another one I requested that they purchased. I'm sure I heard about this from another blog, but can't remember who!
